Spanish court upholds rights of vegan meat producer in legal challenge.

In 2022, animal-people meat industry associations sued vegan meat manufacturer Heura Foods for unfair competition, challenging marketing campaigns between 2020 and 2022 that criticized the environmental and health impacts of the animal-people meat industry. The Barcelona Court of Appeal found that Heura’s statements were supported by credible scientific evidence and protected by the constitutional right to freedom of expression. The judges concluded that the company’s communications were neither misleading nor unlawfully comparative. Heura CEO Marc Coloma (vegan) lauded the ruling as a triumph for the agrifood sector and for the transition to sustainable food. He stated, “There was an attempt to silence a conversation this country needs, and the courts have protected the right to have it. This ruling goes far beyond Heura: the entire agrifood sector wins with it.”
